Since 2002, every design has started with how dogs actually ride, rest, and recover.
Why Engineering Matters in a Comfort Product
A dog bed or car seat is a structural product. It supports a moving, jumping, aging body every day, often for a decade. Products built on softness alone flatten, sag, and lose the support a companion depends on long before the companion stops needing it.
Engineering is what separates the two. It means a support core that holds its shape, fabrics chosen from mills that document what goes into them, components you can name, and claims you can check. Every Animals Matter® piece is designed in California, and our bed and furniture line is cut, sewn, and finished by hand in our Palm Springs facility.
When a maker will not tell you what is inside a product, treat the silence as the answer. Ours is below, in full.
Protected by InventionTwo Utility Patents on Our Dog Car Seats
Animals Matter® dog car seats are protected by dual utility patents, U.S. Pat. Nos. 7,717,062 and 7,574,975. A utility patent is granted for how a product is built and how it functions, not how it looks. These patents belong to the car seat line specifically, and they reflect a design question we have worked on for more than two decades: how a dog actually rides in a vehicle.
The answer lives in the details. Each Companion Car Seat® installs with your vehicle's own seat belt system: a recessed groove lets the lap belt wrap securely around the front, and the shoulder belt buckles at the top back of the seat. An included attachment strap clips to your companion's harness, never to a collar, helping reduce roaming, lap riding, and driver distraction. Inside is structured foam built with CertiPUR-US® certified components, chosen for the job the seat actually does.
The same engineering habit shaped the Backseat Extender Safety System: structured, CertiPUR-US® certified foam pieces that fill the open rear footwell from the floor up, rather than draping fabric over the gap.

Certified fabrics and foam
Our fabrics come from both American mills and globally respected mills abroad. The performance fabric on our outdoor pieces is Outdura®, woven in Hudson, North Carolina. The only textiles we source from outside the United States are select fabrics not available domestically, drawn from trusted mills that meet OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 requirements.
Our foam and fiber are made in Southern California to our own specifications. They are not off-the-shelf components: we specify the density, the firmness, and the build, and they are made to those numbers. That is where Companion-Pedic® came from, and it is why the figures below are ours to publish.
Certification applies at the component level rather than to a finished product: designated foam components are CertiPUR-US® certified. Animals Matter, Inc. is listed in the public CertiPUR-US® directory, which you are welcome to search yourself. Latex foam sits outside the CertiPUR-US® program entirely, so our latex pieces are not covered by it, and we do not claim that they are.
The numbers we will publish
In our orthopedic bed line, the memory foam has a density of 4 to 5 pounds per cubic foot, over a high-resilience, high-density base support foam rated at 55 ILD. ILD is a firmness measure: how much weight a foam needs to compress it by a quarter, so a higher number means a firmer, more supportive base. The intended construction is memory foam over that support base, similar in principle to premium human bedding.
Luxura-Fill® is our proprietary blend of high-spring and garnetted fibers, designed for cushioning and long-lasting resilience. Construction varies by product and by size. Dog stairs, car seats, and Backseat Extenders are built without memory foam; they use structured, CertiPUR-US® certified foam suited to their job.
We would rather publish the numbers we can stand behind than a spec sheet we cannot.
Component integrity
Our pieces are built with carefully selected components that align with California Proposition 65 standards. Our fabrics are evaluated with PFAS in mind, and our textile partners confirm that PFAS are not intentionally used in their production processes.
Proprietary support systems
Companion-Pedic® is our engineered orthopedic cushioning for the bed line, designed to relieve joint pressure while providing structured, long-lasting support. Luxura-Fill® is a premium, high-loft fiber fill that maintains structure and shape. Luxura-Protect™ is a discreet, integrated waterproof barrier on select styles that protects the core of the bed from moisture and everyday accidents.
Performance fabric with a namable origin
The performance fabric on every Animals Matter® outdoor piece is Outdura®, a 100% solution-dyed acrylic woven in Hudson, North Carolina at a mill whose textile heritage dates to the early 1900s.

A companion spends much of their life asleep, on whatever surface we provide. That makes the construction of a bed a wellbeing question and not only a comfort one. Here is what the engineering on this page actually does for a companion day to day, in the same register as everything else here: what it does, and what it does not.
Support for joints and aging bodies
Companion-Pedic® is built for pressure distribution, not softness alone. In the orthopedic bed line, memory foam at 4 to 5 pounds per cubic foot sits over a high-resilience base rated at 55 ILD, so weight is spread across the surface rather than concentrating at the hips, shoulders, and elbows, and the base does not let a companion bottom out onto the floor underneath. That matters most for heavier dogs and for older ones, who spend more of the day lying down. This is comfort and support, not treatment. Wellbeing through what is not in the product
Part of the health story of any product is subtraction. Designated foam components are CertiPUR-US® certified, a program that tests foam against standards for emissions, durability, and content. Our fabrics are evaluated with PFAS in mind, and our textile partners confirm that PFAS are not intentionally used in their production processes. Components are selected to align with California Proposition 65 standards. A companion sleeps with their face against this surface for hours at a time, which is exactly why we care what is in it.
A sleep surface you can actually keep clean
Hygiene is a design decision. Covers unzip and are machine washed cold and line dried, with no heat, no bleach, and no bleach alternatives, so the surface a companion sleeps on can be cleaned on a regular schedule instead of spot-cleaned indefinitely. Inserts and foam are not washable: spot-treat them with half white vinegar and half water and let them air dry fully. A bed that cannot be washed becomes a bed nobody washes.
Support that holds through the senior years
Longevity is a wellbeing feature, not only an economic one. Foam that softens and fill that packs down withdraw support gradually, and they tend to do it over exactly the years a companion needs support most. What this is not
A bed is not a treatment. No sleeping surface substitutes for veterinary care, and we will not describe one as though it does. Good construction gives a companion a better place to rest, and a better place to rest is worth engineering for. That is the claim, and it is the whole claim.
What We Will Not ClaimHonest Limits: What No Comfort Product Can Do
Our car seats are designed to do one thing well: keep your companion settled in a place of their own instead of in your lap or roaming the cabin. A dog moving freely around a vehicle is a distraction to the driver, and removing that distraction is a benefit to everyone in the car. That is the safety story, stated plainly.
Here is the other half of it. No car seat will protect a dog from injury in a serious accident, and we will not suggest otherwise. Animals Matter® does not publish crash-test ratings, does not claim crash protection, and will not describe any comfort product as guaranteed safe. Our car seats and the Backseat Extender Safety System are comfort and support products. They are not restraints, and no car seat, extender, hammock, or pad can restrain a dog on its own in a sudden stop.
Always secure your companion with an appropriate vehicle restraint or safety harness while driving. The Companion Car Seat® includes an attachment strap for exactly this reason: it clips to a harness, never to a collar.
