How to Choose a Dog Bed Rug
Size: Measure the Stretch
Measure your dog lying fully stretched, nose to the base of the tail, and add a few inches to shift and turn.
The orthopedic rugs run from 35 x 26 inches (Small) to 58 x 42 inches (X-Large). Our product photos show the Large with dogs of about 55 to 68 pounds. Between sizes, choose the larger.
Fill: Memory Foam or Luxura-Fill®
The Ruby, Roxy, and Faux Fur Ortho Shag Rug™ styles carry a 1-inch Companion-Pedic® memory foam insert for structured, orthopedic cushioning.
The Faux Fur Shag Bear Bed is filled with channeled Luxura-Fill® for a plush, softer feel. It is not an orthopedic bed.
Profile: Low by Design
A bed rug has no sides and very little height, so there is nothing to climb. That suits older dogs and dogs who sprawl.
It is cushioning in a flat form, not a deep mattress. Dogs who curl up, or who want deeper cushioning, are better matched to a bolstered or orthopedic bed.

For a flat rug, length matters more than weight. Measure your dog lying fully stretched, from nose to the base of the tail, then find the first size that fits.

Where does a dog bed rug work best?
In the living room, a bed rug lies flat in front of the sofa or beside a chair and reads as part of the furnishings rather than as a dog bed. In the bedroom, it sits at the foot of the bed or along one side, low enough for your dog to step on and off through the night.
Beside a sofa, it gives a dog who wants to be near you a place of their own at floor level. And because it is flat, it moves easily from room to room, or to a guest room or a vacation house, so a familiar place can come along.

A dog bed rug is a low, open resting surface with no bolsters, made to lie flat on the floor like a rug. It suits dogs who stretch out rather than curl up, and it is designed to sit in a living room or bedroom as part of the room. Our orthopedic styles add a 1-inch Companion-Pedic® memory foam insert.
The difference is resting style. A traditional bed has bolsters or raised sides for dogs who curl up and lean into an edge. A bed rug is flat and open for dogs who sprawl at full length. Some homes use both: a rug in the living room and a bolstered bed in the bedroom.
Some are. The Ruby Ortho Puff®, Roxy Ortho Puff®, Faux Fur Ortho Shag Rug™, and Faux Fur Ortho Snug Rug™ each carry a 1-inch Companion-Pedic® memory foam insert. The Faux Fur Shag Bear Bed is filled with Luxura-Fill® fiber for plush comfort and is not an orthopedic bed.
Measure your dog lying fully stretched, from nose to the base of the tail, and add a few inches. The orthopedic rugs come in Small (35 x 26 inches), Medium (44 x 34), Large (52 x 37), and X-Large (58 x 42). The Bear Bed runs from 30 x 22 to 52 x 42 inches. Between sizes, choose the larger.
A bed rug has no sides to climb over, so an older dog can simply walk on and lie down. The orthopedic styles add memory foam cushioning in that low form. A dog who wants deeper cushioning may be better suited to a thicker orthopedic bed.
Unzip the cover and machine wash it in cold water, then hang dry, with no dryer on any setting, no bleach, and no bleach alternatives. Never machine wash the memory foam or fill insert; spot clean it with a solution of half white vinegar and half water, and let it dry fully in open air, never in a dryer, before replacing the cover.
That is the point of the design. Each rug lies flat and reads as a faux fur rug rather than a dog bed, in finishes from Ivory and Light Gray to Camel and Chocolate shag, so it can sit in a living room, bedroom, or study alongside the furniture you already love.

For an older dog, the best thing about a bed rug is that there is nothing to climb: they can walk straight on and lie down. Its 1-inch memory foam insert adds cushioning, not deep support. If joint support is the priority, choose from our orthopedic dog beds, and keep a rug for the rooms where your dog rests during the day.
