Which Setup Do I Need?
Three questions, as our general guide from what we have seen.
- Does your second row have captain's chairs? The Single Extra Large Extender is usually the choice, on its own between the chairs.
- Does something stick out from the back of your center console? Choose the Center Seat Extender with an extender on either side. Two Small extenders make 58 inches across; two Large or two Extra Large make 68 inches. The Small, Large and Extra Large Center Seat Systems include all three pieces.
- Is the back of your center console flat? Choose the Center Bridge with an extender on either side. Two Small extenders make 47 inches across; two Large or two Extra Large make 57 inches. The Small, Large and Extra Large Systems include all three pieces.
Measure your rear footwell side to side and compare it with these combined lengths and the diagrams in the photos. Every combination can work; your measurements decide. Building it piece by piece? Every part is also sold on its own.

Build the Backseat Extender System
The Backseat Extender System is modular, so you can choose a complete system or build it piece by piece. The three steps below show a Center Bridge setup: two extenders and the Center Bridge, for a wider, more continuous backseat platform for your companion. After them come the two other setups: one Extra Large Extender for captain's chairs, and the Center Seat Extender for a console that sticks out.
Step 1: Start with Two Backseat Extenders
Place two Animals Matter® Companion Backseat Extenders™ in the rear footwells behind the front seats to help fill both open footwell spaces and create a wider cushioned backseat platform.
Step 2: Add the Center Bridge
Place the Center Bridge between the two installed extenders to help fill the center gap and create a more continuous backseat surface.
Step 3: Complete the System
With both rear footwells and the center gap supported, the system helps create a more complete, cushioned backseat travel area for your dog.
Captain's Chair Setup: One Extra Large Extender
For second-row captain's chairs, place one Extra Large Extender in the open space between the two chairs. It is 24 inches wide with a deeper 13 inch top, and it turns the gap into one continuous, cushioned surface for your dog. Measure the space between the chairs first.
Console Setup: The Center Seat Extender
If something sticks out from the back of your center console, such as a rear display or vents, place the Center Seat Extender in the middle so its notch wraps around it. Add an extender on either side, sized to your vehicle, or use it on its own for the middle.

Choose Your Pieces
Size to your footwell, not your dog. Your companion rides on top of the pieces, and the pieces have to fit the space below. Every piece is 13 inches high and tapers from its top depth to an 8-inch base depth, so it sits into the footwell.
- Extra Large Extender: 24"W x 13"H, 13" top depth, 8" base depth. Usually the choice for the space between second-row captain's chairs.
- Large Extender: 24"W x 13"H, 12" top depth, 8" base depth. For wider rear footwells, usually found in full-size SUVs and trucks.
- Small Extender: 19"W x 13"H, 12" top depth, 8" base depth. For tighter rear footwells, usually found in sedans and compact SUVs.
- Center Bridge: 9"W x 13"H, 9.5" depth, 8" base depth. Sits between two extenders when the back of the center console is flat.
- Center Seat Extender: 20"W x 13"H, 12" top depth, 8" base depth, with a 10" wide x 2.5" deep notch. Sits between two extenders, or on its own, when something sticks out from the back of the center console.

Second-Row Captain's Chairs
With second-row captain's chairs, the Extra Large Extender is usually the choice, on its own between the chairs. The Extra Large is a common choice for larger SUVs such as Rivian. Layouts vary, and in some vehicles a Large fits the opening instead, so measure your opening first.
The Center Seat Extender
Look at the back of your center console, the end that faces the back seat. If something sticks out from it into the footwell, such as a rear display, a climate panel or a console extension, the Center Seat Extender is the piece for the middle. It measures 20"W x 13"H with a 12" top depth tapering to an 8" base, and a notch 10 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep, centered with 5 inches of cushion on each side, wraps around the part that sticks out. The extender sits level with the seat cushion, so the middle of the footwell becomes one continuous, cushioned surface. Place an extender on either side, Small, Large or Extra Large, sized to your vehicle, or use it on its own in the middle.
How to measure: measure the part that sticks out from the back of the console, both its width (the notch fits up to 10 inches) and how far it reaches toward the back seat (the notch fits up to 2.5 inches). Then measure your footwell side to side and compare it with the combined lengths above. If your measurements run larger, contact us before ordering.
