The Best Luxury Dog Beds: A Design House Guide to Materials, Construction, and Lasting Comfort
The best beds are the ones a dog chooses on their own, every night, without being called.
That is the standard this guide is written against. Animals Matter® has designed and built luxury dog beds since 2002, and this is a maker's guide rather than a shopping list: what furniture-grade construction actually means, which materials earn their cost, and eight beds from our luxury dog bed collection, each matched honestly to the sleeper it serves and, just as importantly, the sleeper it does not.
What is the best luxury dog bed?
The best luxury dog bed pairs furniture-grade construction with support matched to how a dog sleeps. Our best overall is the Ruby Ortho Puff®: a faux fur nest bed with Luxura-Fill® bolsters over a Companion-Pedic® memory foam base, handcrafted by our artisans in California. Match silhouette to sleeper: nests for curlers, loungers for stretchers, low-entry beds for seniors.
No single bed is best for every dog, and any guide that claims otherwise is selling rather than advising. Dogs are curlers, leaners, stretchers, and step-in seniors, and the right answer changes with each. The eight beds below cover those sleep styles. If you want a step-by-step walkthrough of sizing and silhouette first, our guide on how to choose the right luxury dog bed does exactly that.
What makes a dog bed genuinely luxury
Luxury is a construction standard, not a price point. These are the five things we would check on any bed, including ours.
Furniture-grade construction
A genuinely luxury dog bed is built the way good furniture is built: structured seams, upholstery-grade fabric, and a shape that holds after months of nightly use. Every Animals Matter® bed is made to order and handcrafted by our artisans in California. Construction varies by product and size, which is what made-to-order means in practice.
Foam that is specified, not implied
Most dog beds say "orthopedic" without saying anything measurable. Ours is specified. Companion-Pedic® memory foam has a density of 4-5 pounds per cubic foot; density measures how much material is in the foam, and it is the single best predictor of how long foam keeps supporting instead of flattening. Beneath it, the intended layered construction places that memory foam over a high-resilience, high-density support foam rated at 55 ILD, similar in principle to premium human bedding. ILD (indentation load deflection) is the force it takes to compress a foam: at 55 ILD, the base stays firm so the memory foam above it can do its work instead of bottoming out. Designated foam components are CertiPUR-US certified, and our foam and fiber are made for us in Los Angeles.
Fill that keeps its loft
Bolsters fail before foam does on most beds. Luxura-Fill®, our proprietary blend of high-spring and garnetted fibers, is designed for cushioning and long-lasting resilience, so a bolster leaned on tonight offers the same height next season. Beds designated Companion-Pedic® use orthopedic foam construction; pieces designated Luxura-Fill®, like the Puffette™, use this fiber construction instead; some designs combine both.
Textile quality
The covers are upholstery-grade: thick woven faux fur, textured velvets, and select textiles thoughtfully sourced from trusted U.S. and global mills. On our outdoor pieces, Outdura® performance fabric is woven in Hudson, North Carolina, and resists fading, stains, mildew, and water.
Longevity you can maintain
A luxury bed should be serviceable, not disposable. Every bed here has a removable cover that machine washes cold and line dries, so the piece you choose is the piece you keep. Where the cost difference comes from is its own subject; we break it down plainly in why luxury dog beds are more expensive.
One more credential, because provenance is part of the standard: Animals Matter® began in 2002, making better beds for rescued Pit Bulls in a small upholstery shop in Compton. More than two decades later, every design still starts with the same question: would my dog choose this?
The best luxury dog beds, matched to the sleeper
Best overall: Ruby Ortho Puff® Companion-Pedic® Luxury Dog Bed

The signature Animals Matter® nest bed, and the one we would hand most dogs first. Ultra luxe faux fur over a textured velvet lower half, overstuffed Luxura-Fill® bolsters, and a Companion-Pedic® memory foam base beneath the softness. Who it is for: dogs who curl, nest, and settle deeper when gently surrounded. Who it is not for: dogs who sprawl flat or avoid raised sides; they belong on the Bed Rug below. Five sizes, X-Small through X-Large, in Light Gray, Charcoal, and Ivory. $389.99-$529.99.
Best round nest: Katie Ortho Puff® Encore™ Companion-Pedic® Luxury Dog Bed

The Katie Ortho Puff® Encore™ carries the iconic Katie Puff® design forward in a fresh, ultra-soft Encore fabric. A generously overstuffed circular bolster creates a true nest, with Luxura-Fill® cushioning in the bolster and a CertiPUR-US certified Companion-Pedic® memory foam base below. A matching Katie Puff Encore blanket is available. Who it is for: committed curlers and dogs who seek enclosed, calming rest. Who it is not for: full-length stretchers, who will drape over the bolster instead of using it; choose the Ortho Lounger. Small through X-Large in Camel, Charcoal, and Pearl Gray. $389.99-$499.99.
Best for stretch-out sleepers: Katie Puff® Encore Companion-Pedic® Ortho Lounger

A lounger-style bed for dogs who sleep at full length. The plush, overstuffed bolster uses Luxura-Fill®, and at the core sits an orthopedic layer of CertiPUR-US certified Companion-Pedic® memory foam. An optional Luxura-Protect™ waterproof liner sits beneath the cover to shield the foam from occasional spills or accidents; it is not designed for ongoing moisture, so pair it with a waterproof blanket for frequent accidents. Who it is for: sprawlers and larger companions who want room to extend. Who it is not for: dogs who want a snug, enclosed nest. One honest note from the product page: the Large is very big, so check the dimensions before ordering. S, M, and L in Charcoal, Pearl Gray, and Camel. $379.99-$639.99 across sizes and liner options.
Best for leaners: Ali Jewel® Ortho Square™ Companion-Pedic® Luxury Dog Bed

Dogs rarely sleep centered; they lean into a side or press into a corner. The Ortho Square™ answers with overstuffed Luxura-Fill® bolsters on all four edges around a CertiPUR-US certified Companion-Pedic® memory foam center, so every direction a dog settles has support. The square footprint sits flush against a wall or corner the way furniture does. Finished in soft velvet in six jewel tones, from Diamond Sand to Emerald Teal. Who it is for: leaners, corner-sleepers, and dogs who rotate positions all night. Who it is not for: dogs who need a low step-in entry, since all four sides are raised; see the Ruby Sydney™ next. S, M, and L. $399.99-$499.99.
Best low-entry design: Ruby Sydney™ Ortho Companion-Pedic® Luxury Dog Bed

A Signature Collection bed with a deliberately low front profile, so older companions and any dog who should not climb over a tall bolster can simply step in. The sloping headrest bolster is filled with Luxura-Fill®, over a CertiPUR-US certified Companion-Pedic® memory foam cushion, in thick faux fur with a textured velvet bottom. A Luxura-Protect™ waterproof liner is available as an option. Who it is for: seniors, head-resters, and dogs who like an open front with a bolster to lean on behind. Who it is not for: dogs who want to be fully surrounded on all sides. Small through X-Large in Ivory, Light Gray, and Charcoal. $399.99-$649.99 across sizes and liner options.
Best for small dogs: Puffette™ Plush Luxury Dog Bed

The Puffette™ was designed for small companions from the first stitch, not scaled down from a bigger bed. Luxura-Fill® fiber fills both the scalloped bolsters and the channeled inner cushion, where sewn channels keep the fill evenly distributed so the surface stays smooth. This is our proprietary fiber construction rather than memory foam, chosen because it responds to even the lightest sleeper. Made to order in furniture-grade upholstery fabric, in Travertine and Graphite. Who it is for: dogs and cats up to about 24 pounds; the XS (20-inch outer diameter) suits companions up to 12 pounds, the Small (24-inch) up to 24 pounds. Who it is not for: anyone bigger; medium and large dogs belong on the beds above. $329.99-$349.99.
Best waterproof and outdoor option: Raine Outdoor Ortho Companion-Pedic® Contour Lounger™ with Waterproof Cover

The performance piece of the group. Outdura® fabric, woven in Hudson, North Carolina, resists fading, stains, mildew, and water, and a breathable Luxura-Protect™ hydrostatic waterproof liner protects the foam inside. The contoured design offers head supports at both ends, with a high-density foam base topped by CertiPUR-US certified Companion-Pedic® memory foam. At home indoors, on a deck, or poolside. Who it is for: water-loving dogs, indoor-outdoor households, and anyone who needs the foam protected from wet. Who it is not for: dogs whose priority is plush faux fur softness; this is a performance fabric, not a fur nest. Medium and Large in six colors. $439.99-$519.99.
Best rug-style bed: Ruby Ortho Puff® Companion-Pedic® Luxury Dog Bed Rug

The support of an orthopedic bed with the profile of a designer rug. A low, open silhouette in thick, tightly woven faux fur with a textured velvet bottom and a Companion-Pedic® memory foam insert for cushioning, it gives dogs who dislike bolsters a grounded place to stretch and sprawl, and it reads as an accent piece rather than pet gear. Who it is for: open-loungers, full-body stretchers, and homes where the bed lives in plain sight. Who it is not for: leaners who use a bolster as a pillow; they will be happier on the Ortho Square™ or the Ruby Ortho Puff®. Small through X-Large in Ivory, Charcoal, and Light Gray. $369.99-$499.99.

Care and longevity
Every bed in this guide follows the same care standard. Covers unzip, machine wash cold, and line dry. Inserts and foam are never machine washed; spot-treat them with a diluted white vinegar solution and let them air dry fully before re-covering. For households where accidents are likely, choose the Luxura-Protect™ waterproof liner option where offered, or drape a waterproof blanket over the bed, and let the liner take the risk instead of the foam. Cared for this way, the cover stays fresh and the construction underneath keeps doing its quiet work for years.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best luxury dog bed?
The best luxury dog bed matches furniture-grade construction to how a dog sleeps. The Ruby Ortho Puff® Companion-Pedic® Luxury Dog Bed is our best overall: a handcrafted faux fur nest with Luxura-Fill® bolsters over a Companion-Pedic® memory foam base. Stretch-out sleepers do better on a lounger, and seniors on a low-entry design.
What makes a dog bed luxury rather than just expensive?
Construction, not price. A genuinely luxury dog bed uses specified support materials such as 4-5 lb per cubic foot memory foam, resilient bolster fill that keeps its loft, upholstery-grade textiles, and a removable washable cover, and it is built to hold its shape for years of nightly use.
Are luxury dog beds worth it?
A well-built bed is chosen once and lived with for years. Specified foam density, resilient fill, and washable upholstery-grade covers mean the bed keeps supporting and keeps looking right instead of flattening and being replaced. Over the life of the bed, one considered choice usually costs less than a series of disposable ones.
How do I choose the right size luxury dog bed?
Measure your dog in their usual sleeping position. Curlers are measured curled and fit nest beds sized by the inner resting area; stretchers are measured nose to tail base and need a lounger or rug long enough to lie flat. When a dog falls between sizes, size up.
How do you clean a luxury dog bed?
Unzip the removable cover, machine wash it cold, and line dry it. Never machine wash the inserts or foam; spot-treat them with a diluted white vinegar solution and air dry completely. For spill-prone households, a waterproof liner or waterproof blanket protects the foam itself.
What is Companion-Pedic® memory foam?
Companion-Pedic® is the Animals Matter® orthopedic foam system. The memory foam has a density of 4-5 pounds per cubic foot, and the intended layered construction places it over a high-resilience support foam rated at 55 ILD, so the surface contours to the dog while the base keeps the bed from bottoming out. Designated foam components are CertiPUR-US certified.
What is Luxura-Fill®?
Luxura-Fill® is a proprietary Animals Matter® blend of high-spring and garnetted fibers used in bolsters and fiber-constructed beds. It is designed for cushioning and long-lasting resilience, so bolsters keep their height and loft instead of packing down.
Do luxury dog beds come in sizes for small dogs?
Yes. The Puffette™ Plush Luxury Dog Bed is built specifically for small companions: the XS, with a 20-inch outer diameter, suits dogs and cats up to 12 pounds, and the Small, at 24 inches, up to 24 pounds. Both use Luxura-Fill® fiber construction sized to respond to very light sleepers.
Every bed here is made to order and handcrafted by our artisans in California, the way it has been done since 2002. Explore the full range in our luxury dog bed collection, choose the silhouette your companion already sleeps in, and let the bed do the rest. Because when your companion sleeps deeply, the whole house rests easier.
